Butternut Fire update: Great Barrington Fire Department reports no growth of fire

Previously, the fire has been reported to have grown to 1,200 acres.

Great Barrington — Through its Facebook page, the town’s Fire Department announced on Friday, Nov. 22 at 7 a.m. that there has been no observed growth of the Butternut Fire overnight.

Previously, the fire has been reported to have grown to 1,200 acres.

In the announcement, the department reported that several hot spots in the area of the fire are being observed, but the department was not specific on the geographic areas of the hotspots.

“Today’s goal is to cut the final line – the fire break–through, connecting the eastern and western line.  This line would in theory bring the fire under containment. We are stopping short of making that statement – until proper recognition can be obtained under the proper conditions (dry and sunny) we can not verify with 100% confidence the extent of the fire.”

The department will be requesting resources from the State Police to provide aerial infrared scanning of the area.

The department reports that, while the area has received over an inch of rain over the last 24 hours, conditions are still dry and the burn ban in Great Barrington will continue.

As of Thursday, Nov. 21, the department has discontinued daily press briefings on the fire.
