Great Barrington — According to an update by the Great Barrington Fire Department on Saturday, Nov. 23, operations at the Butternut Fire site are continuing on a smaller scale today.
The department reports that a members from a Type 6 engine crew from Wyoming knowledgeable about wildfires are walking the fire perimeter to verify that the breaks in the fire are holding.
The wind in the area is expected to pick up over the next few days, forecasted up to 40 mph.
The department states “This is not a cause for panic – this is expected.”
Due to the potential high winds, the department expects to be in a defensive mode, closely monitoring the area.
“Should there be the slightest indication of danger to residential areas, we will stage structural firefighting equipment and personnel to protect property. Again, this is precautionary and not a cause for panic or fear.”
The department asks people to stay away from the area of the fire and that, due to the wind, trees will fall throughout the mountain area.
“This will compound the dangers on the mountain. This entire area is unstable at best. Due to the rains, instability of the ground because of root structures and ground cover being burned there have been landslides and boulders sliding and rolling on the steep terrain.”
Residents who notice flames can report it at (413) 528-0788 ext. 8.
