To the editor:
On May 15th, Great Barrington residents will vote for two open selectboard seats. Although I am not a resident of Great Barrington, this election matters a lot to folks like me who are a part of the South County community, living in surrounding towns. Having known Kate Burke for the last four years, I strongly endorse her candidacy.
Amid a declining population rate in Berkshire County, Kate understands the imperative role Great Barrington plays in keeping the Southern Berkshires livable for families like hers and mine. She sees affordability as a key factor to future growth and strategic planning, all while preserving the beauty and charm that is essential to Great Barrington. Kate is the mother of a young family, and she clearly understands the comprehensive challenges that lie ahead for our vibrant community.
Having witnessed Kate through her role at the Great Barrington Farmers’ Market, she has not only been a cornerstone the past couple of years in one of our most cherished community institutions that doubles as a town square, but she has also nurtured the indispensable double-SNAP benefits program to grow 80 percent since taking over the managerial role, all while expanding the vendor line-up and seeing improved foot traffic. Her abilities to listen to multiple constituents, think, communicate and lead people are already proven attributes that will serve her well on the selectboard.
