Washington, D.C., Jan. 25, 2026 — Murphy On SOTU: We Can’t Vote To Fund This Lawless DHS
U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Sunday joined CNN’s State of the Union with Dana Bash to react to the brutal killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis. Appearing on the program directly after Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino, Murphy blasted the Trump administration’s shameless attempts to justify the shooting without evidence. Murphy linked ICE’s lawlessness and deliberate provocations of chaos and violence to President Trump’s larger project of cracking down on Americans’ free speech and subverting our democracy. He also urged his Senate colleagues to demand accountability and vote against providing new funding for the Department of Homeland Security without constraints to rein in the agency’s lawlessness.
Murphy called out Border Patrol Commander Greg Bovino’s egregious lies about the Minnesota shooting: ‘I thought that was a bone-chilling interview. I was shaking as I was listening to it, in large part because it takes just an unbelievable amount of gall to lie to the American public. I mean, everybody saw that video, and yet, there he was telling you and telling the American public that this young man was brandishing a weapon, that he was impeding officers, that he was there to attend a riot, that he was engaged in assault when everyone can see that that’s not true. It should freak the American public out that the Trump administration lies this easily, will lie to your face when you can see the evidence for yourself…Every single day, these guys are stone cold liars.’
Slamming Bovino’s violent threats against Americans exercising their legal right to observe and record law enforcement, he continued: ‘What he essentially told you is that if you just happen to be present when they are undertaking an operation, if you pull out your phone to record it, the use of force against you is justified. That is not true. That’s not what the law says. That’s not what the Constitution says. But they have now, I guess, put Americans on alert that you are going to be shot by law enforcement officers if you are simply trying to witness and record law enforcement operations.’
Murphy laid out why the Senate must vote against funding DHS this week: ‘We can’t vote to fund this lawless Department of Homeland Security. And remember, it’s not just in Minnesota. They’re violating the law all over the country. I spent last week in Texas where they are locking up two-year-old and three-year-old kids who are here in the United States legally just for the purpose of traumatizing them. This is a nationwide campaign of lawlessness… We cannot fund a Department of Homeland Security that is murdering American citizens, that is traumatizing little boys and girls all across the country in violation of the law… This is something that I think the American people demand of us right now. 60, 70% of Americans don’t support what ICE is doing.’
Murphy warned Trump intends to expand his campaign of violence in American cities: ‘The fact of the matter is, Minneapolis is fundamentally less safe because ICE and CBP are there, and that’s the point. They are there to cause a conflict. They are there to create mayhem. And it isn’t going to be just isolated to Minneapolis as they continue to staff up with officers who are not trained for this kind of work. This is going to be in Philadelphia. This is going to be in Phoenix. This is coming to your city as well. And so if we don’t stop this in its tracks, what you are seeing in Minnesota – people being killed simply for exercising their First Amendment rights – is going to be a regular feature in this country. That is dystopian.’

Washington, D.C., Jan. 15, 2026 — Moulton, Ansari Warn Appropriators: No More Funding for ICE Without Accountability and Reform
Today, Congressman Seth Moutlon (MA -06) and Congresswoman Yassamin Ansari (AZ-03) sent a letter to the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee making clear that they will oppose any funding bill that expands Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) resources without strict guardrails and enforceable reforms.
In the letter to Chairman Mark Amodei (NV-02) and Ranking Member Henry Cuellar (TX-28), the lawmakers cited a growing national pattern of illegal and abusive ICE practices—underscored by the murder of Renee Good—including the use of excessive force, prolonged detention in facilities not designed to hold people, denial of medical care and legal access, and a lack of basic transparency. Congressman Moulton and Congresswoman Ansari also raised serious concerns about ICE’s use of masked agents during civil enforcement actions and numerous examples of ICE detaining U.S. citizens.
‘Congress cannot keep writing blank checks to an agency that repeatedly violates the law and actively harms its own citizens,’ said Congressman Moulton. ‘ICE has shown over and over again that it cannot be trusted to follow the law and protect the American people. Until ICE stops harming—and in some cases, killing—U.S. citizens and others in its custody, Congress should not spend another federal dollar on this agency. Our power of the purse is one of the only tools we have left to force accountability, and we need to use it.’
‘ICE is a rogue agency that Donald Trump is deploying to terrorize communities,’ said Congresswoman Ansari. ‘We must not approve any additional funding for this Trump militia force that has lost the trust, credibility, and legitimacy in the eyes of the American public. Instead, we need accountability in place for ICE’s abuses, including the assault and murder of people on city streets and in detention facilities. I urge our appropriators to hold ICE and Donald Trump accountable for their crimes.’
Congressman Moulton and Congresswoman Ansari state that they will not vote for a Homeland Security Appropriations bill that does not:
- Freeze ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations funding at or below Fiscal Year 2024 enacted levels. No increases above that level should be provided without strict conditions on demonstrated compliance with detention standards, civil rights protections, and transparency requirements.
- Prohibit the use of ICE field offices and processing centers for overnight or multi-day detention. Congress should require that all individuals be transferred to compliant detention facilities within a fixed number of hours, with mandatory notification to their attorney of record and an identified family member prior to transfer.
- Require ICE to issue and enforce a nationwide policy prohibiting the routine use of masks by agents during civil enforcement actions.
- Reaffirm and strengthen language guaranteeing immediate access for Members of Congress and designated staff to any DHS facility used to detain or hold individuals, without advance notice or administrative delay.
- Require regular public reporting on length of stay in field offices, medical staffing levels, complaints received, and corrective actions taken, disaggregated by facility.
- Require ICE to publicly report, on a quarterly basis, all instances in which United States citizens or lawful permanent residents are stopped, detained, questioned, or held by ICE. Reports should include the duration of detention, the asserted basis for the action, how citizenship or lawful status was verified, whether force or restraints were used, and whether the individual was transferred or released.
- Condition the obligation or expenditure of funds for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations on the full reinstatement and independent operation of ICE’s Office of Professional Responsibility and DHS oversight entities, including the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties and the Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman. DHS should be required to certify to Congress that these offices are fully staffed, retain independent investigative authority, and may transmit findings directly to Congress without alteration, delay, or political interference.

Washington, D.C., Jan. 14, 2026 — Following ICE Surge IN Minnesota, Rep. Craig Introduces Articles of Impeachment Against DHS Sec. Kristi Noem
Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig joined Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-01) in introducing Articles of Impeachment against Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem, whose leadership has wreaked havoc on Minnesota communities and recently resulted in the killing of Minneapolis mother Renee Nicole Good.
In the wake of the recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) surge in Minnesota, Rep. Craig has led the fight against Secretary Noem’s continued efforts to strip Minnesotans of due process, push Minnesota state and local authorities out of the investigation of Renee Good’s killing and prevent Members of Congress from exercising their right to conduct oversight of federal immigration facilities. Rep. Craig and her colleagues have introduced three impeachment articles, citing obstruction of Congress, violation of public trust and self-dealing.
‘Secretary Noem has shown us that she will do whatever it takes to advance President Trump’s heartless and dangerous immigration agenda,’ said Rep. Craig. ‘Under her leadership, DHS has repeatedly ignored due process, denied Members of Congress their right to conduct oversight of immigration detention facilities and used immigrants as political pawns. This month, her political stunts in Minneapolis got a woman killed. Secretary Noem is a danger to every single Minnesotan – and that’s why today, I’m formally introducing Articles of Impeachment. Enough is enough.’
Following the murder of Renee Good by an ICE officer in South Minneapolis, Rep. Craig demanded that federal agencies, who had refused to share critical evidence with Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), work with state and local law enforcement to conduct a full and fair investigation into the incident.
Rep. Craig then attempted to conduct a Congressional oversight visit of the regional ICE detention center at the Whipple Federal Building in Minneapolis. She, Rep. Ilhan Omar (MN-05) and Rep. Kelly Morrison (MN-03) were met with armed ICE agents and ultimately denied entry to the facility. Following the visit, Secretary Noem released a statement that inaccurately portrayed the events of the day and denied the Members’ legal right to conduct unannounced oversight visits.
Washington, D.C., Jan. 23, 2026 — Crow, Veterans Call on Congress to End Forever Wars, Reclaim War Powers
Congressman Jason Crow (D-CO-06), a combat veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee, today urged his congressional colleagues to reclaim their war powers and hold the Trump Administration accountable for its ongoing military adventurism abroad.
Crow’s push came the same day that the U.S. House voted on a Crow-backed War Powers Resolution reining in the Administration’s unauthorized military action in Venezuela.
In his remarks, Crow warned that the Trump Administration risks plunging the U.S. into another forever war in Venezuela. He highlighted Americans’ lack of appetite for more reckless foreign intervention and underscored the need for leaders to focus on bringing down costs for every American.
Crow was joined by fellow Democratic veterans Representatives Chris Deluzio (D-PA-17), Derek Tran (D-CA-45), and Maggie Goodlander (D-NH-02); former Congressman and VoteVets Senior Advisor Max Rose; and a number of veterans.
Watch Congressman Crow’s remarks here, and find a transcript of them below.
In his remarks, Crow said:
‘Good afternoon, I’m Jason Crow from the great state of Colorado, and I’m surrounded here by my fellow veterans, congressional veterans, and non-congressional veterans. We stand here in solidarity for Congress to retake its Constitutional power over War Powers, and to do the right thing for millions of veterans and military families.
‘I served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, was sent to war to help enrich oil companies and oil executives, saw Americans give their lives, and saw people have to go on tour after tour after tour, while people in this building failed to take the votes, failed to debate, failed to take votes to pay for it, so it added to our debt.
‘So I’m sorry, I get pretty damn hot as a three-time combat veteran when a five-time draft dodger like Donald Trump bangs the war drums and talks tough about sending our men and women into battle, into harm’s way, yet again.
‘Because what I learned years ago is that when elites in Washington, D.C. bang the war drums and talk tough, they’re not talking about sending their kids into battle, they’re talking about sending people like me and the people behind me into war—working class folks from towns around this country, from rural areas, from small towns. They’re the ones that have to jump into the tanks and pick up rifles and jump into helicopters and do the tough thing. Well, I’ve had enough of it. The appetite in America for endless wars and endless conflict for trillions of dollars just to pad the pockets of big oil and large executives, it should be done.
‘This is our chance. Congress has the opportunity to end it. To reinsert, as the Constitution required, this building, and these folks, back into the conversation and to resume control over war powers, and to end the endless cycle of war and conflict that we have seen over the last two decades. So we are standing here to call on every member of Congress to take the vote today to end these endless conflicts, to step back into the driver’s seat, and to do the right thing.’
Washington, D.C., Jan. 21, 2026 — Rep. Kelly introduces amendment to prevent Trump from purchasing Greenland
Today, U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly (IL-02) introduced an amendment to the defense funding bill preventing President Donald Trump from purchasing or attacking Greenland and Denmark. President Trump has long threatened to purchase Greenland, most recently stating “you’ll find out” on how far he’s willing to go to takeover the territory.
‘I’m not waiting to find out how far President Trump will go to acquire Greenland—I’m stopping him now. It’s ridiculous that we have to prevent the Commander in Chief from risking global stability and threatening our closest allies, but here we are,’ said Rep. Kelly. ‘After President Trump’s attack against Venezuela, it’s clear that he wants global dominance. President Trump is not dictator, and he’s not a conqueror. Our allies have to know that Democrats in Congress are trying to keep him in check, and I urge my Republican colleagues to quit bending the knee to this wannabe dictator.’
Washington, D.C., Jan. 14, 2026 — Crow Introduces Bipartisan Legislation to Prohibit U.S. Invasion of NATO Member States
Congressman Jason Crow (D-CO-06), a combat veteran and member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and House Armed Services Committee, introduced bipartisan legislation, the No Funds for NATO Invasion Act, to prohibit the use of federal funds for an invasion of any North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member state or NATO-protected territory.
Introducing the bill alongside Crow were Representatives Don Bacon (R-NE-02), Bill Keating (D-MA-09), Steny Hoyer (D-MD-05), and Brendan Boyle (D-PA-02).
‘America is at our strongest when we honor our alliances and stand by our allies,’ said Congressman Crow. ‘NATO has been a cornerstone of keeping Americans safe, and undermining our alliances through reckless military adventurism puts Americans at risk. The American people don’t want more foreign intervention. They want lower costs and a smart foreign policy to keep us safe.’
Congressman Crow’s No Funds for NATO Invasion Act would:
- Prohibit any federal funds from being made available for the invasion of a NATO member state or any territory protected by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
- Prohibit any officer or employee of the United States from taking any action to execute an invasion of a NATO member state or any territory protected by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
Earlier this week, Crow called on the Trump Administration to abandon its attempts at nation-building abroad and instead focus on lowering costs and making life more affordable for Americans at home.
Crow also recently met with leaders from Denmark and Greenland, including Danish Ambassador to the United States Jesper Møller Sørensen and Head of Greenland Representation in the United States Jacob Isbosethsen.
