Fourth of July celebration at Shakespeare & Company
Lenox — Shakespeare & Company invites the Berkshire community to its annual Fourth of July celebration. The celebration will begin at 1:30 p.m. outside with a barbecue. At 3 p.m. Company actors, invited dignitaries, and special guests will join for a public reading of The Declaration of Independence. The barbecue will have à la carte pricing; the reading will be free and open to the public.
Fourth of July schedule of events:
1:30 – Community Barbecue (à la carte pricing)
1:45 – Music by The Eagles Brass Band
2:45 – Music performed by Alexander Sovronsky and other Company musicians
3:00 – Reading of The Declaration of Independence
7:30 – The Comedy of Errors – Tina Packer Playhouse (Tickets $20 – $80)
8:30 – The How and the Why – Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre (Tickets $20 – $60)

Township No. 1 Day Community Celebration
Monterey – The Bidwell House Museum is inviting Monterey and Tyringham residents and all friends to a free celebration of local history on Friday, July 3rd from 1 to 4 p.m. The event is named for the earliest official designation for the settlement, Township No. 1 at Hoosatonnuck, in 1737.
The museum is planning a full afternoon of programs and entertainment for all ages.
Live music in the tent: Monterey’s own Easy Ridin’ Papas as well as Steve and Pete Adams, and Moonshine Holler of Tyringham, and Paula Bradley and Bill Dillof.
Re-enactors: The Butler’s Rangers portray historic characters, including Quaker refugees, Loyalist soldiers, and others. They will set up tents to show how they lived, dressed, cooked and spent their days during the time of the American Revolution.
Local history: “History Detectives: Investigating an Old House,” a talk by Steve McAlister. “Candidate for Eternity: The Tumultuous Life of Barnabas Bidwell (son of Rev. Adonijah),” a talk by current Yale student Jonah Bader on his research project.
Also included will be historic crafts, metal-forging, basket-weaving, a baking contest, a scavenger hunt, hat-decorating, face-painting, and more.

Robert Schechter exhibition at the Good Purpose Gallery
Lee – The Good Purpose Gallery is pleased to present the work of artist Robert Schechter July 3-27. An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on Friday, July 3 from 6-9 p.m. at the 40 Main St. gallery. There will be complimentary appetizers, wine, and music, as well as the opportunity to converse with the artist about his work.
