Mason Library to screen ‘This Is Home’

Great Barrington — The Friends of the Great Barrington Libraries will screen the documentary film “This Is Home: A Refugee Story” Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at Mason Library.
Just 21,000 Syrian refugees out of 5 million have been accepted into the United States since 2011. The Sundance Film Festival award-winning documentary “This is Home” follows four families sent to resettle in Baltimore in 2016. They have just eight months to find jobs, learn English and become self-sufficient. Despite good intentions, a vast cultural divide prevents the new arrivals and the Americans attempting to help them from truly understanding each other. Halfway through the process, President Trump issues a travel ban on all refugees from Muslim-majority countries, and suddenly their lives and the safety of loved ones still trapped in Syria become more perilous.
The event is part of the Friends’ First Saturday Free Film Series and will begin with a wine and cheese social at 7 p.m. More socializing and community discussion will follow the film until 10 p.m. The film does not reflect endorsement or advocacy for any particular point of view by the library or the town of Great Barrington. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Mason Library at (413) 528-2403.

The Bookloft to host book launch for ‘Southern Berkshires Through Time’ by Gary Leveille
Great Barrington — The Bookloft will host a book signing and meet and greet with local historian and contributor to The Edge Gary Leveille to introduce his new book “Southern Berkshires Through Time” Saturday, Nov. 3, from 1 to 3 p.m.
Much has changed in the Southern Berkshires over the 150-year period covered photographically in Leveille’s new book. The beauty of the area has drawn photographers since the invention of the camera. Vibrant villages have evolved over the decades, once-thriving textile mills have been replaced by innovative tech enterprises, and the paper industry has struggled and survived. The narratives included in the book offer a glimpse of Southern Berkshire connections past and present.
Leveille is a writer, editor, educator, photographer, columnist, humorist and historian living in the Southern Berkshires. He has worked on projects for Milton Bradley, Hasbro, Parker Brothers, Disney, National Geographic and others. He is the author of several books including the best-selling “Old Route 7: Along the Berkshire Highway: and “Legendary Locals of the Southern Berkshires.”
The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Bookloft at (413) 528-1521 or hello@thebookloft.com.
