Hot air balloon rides and fireworks at Tanglewood on Parade
Lenox— On Tuesday, August 6th, Tanglewood presents “Tanglewood on Parade,” a much-anticipated tradition that dates to 1940, this year dedicated to the life and legacy of the late Seiji Ozawa, Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Laureate, who died last February at the age of 88. A musical genius and thoughtful humanitarian, Ozawa was the BSO’s longest-serving conductor, holding the title of Music Director for 29 years.

The eclectic program, reflecting Ozawa’s far-reaching musical impact, begins with John Williams’ “For Seiji!,” which he composed in 1999 in honor of Ozawa’s 25th anniversary as Music Director of the BSO. The program continues with several of Ozawa’s signature pieces including Hector Berlioz’s “Hungarian March” from “The Damnation of Faust” as well as performances by some of his favorite musical collaborators including Christine Goerke (songs by Richard Strauss) and the Marcus Roberts Trio (Rhapsody in Blue.) Interspersed with guest speakers and video tributes to Ozawa, the program will conclude with the customary 1812 Overture by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, which Ozawa conducted a total of 16 times throughout his years at Tanglewood.
The evening’s tribute concert is preceded by a full afternoon of performances and activities, kicking off with a brass fanfare by musicians from the Boston University Tanglewood Institute at 2 p.m. Families are invited to partake in lawn games, a scavenger hunt, kids yoga with Kripalu, face painting, magic shows, an instrument playground, and hot air balloon rides. There will be a fireworks display over the lawn at the end of the evening.
The event is on Tuesday, August 6th at Tanglewood on West Street in Lenox. Lawn tickets are free for children ages 17 and under. More information can be found online.

Glimmerglass presents ‘Rumpelstiltskin and the Unlovable Children,’ a youth opera world premiere
Cooperstown, N.Y.— From August 6th through the 11th, Glimmerglass is proud to present the world premiere of the youth opera “Rumpelstiltskin and the Unlovable Children” by Jens Ibsen and Cecelia Raker.
Deep in the forest lives a gaggle of feral, unlovable children. They work their hands to the bone every day in service to the evil wizard Rumpelstiltskin…he makes them do chores, brush their teeth regularly, and talk about their feelings!

One day, Rumpelstiltskin tells the children the story of how his childhood friend, a talented businesswoman, was forced to marry the king. Suddenly all the Unlovable Children’s narratives about who they are begin to unravel. When Goldie, the eldest, learns that she’s actually the long-lost daughter of the Queen, she’s faced with a tough choice, go live the life she’d imagined as a princess or stay with the unconventional family that has nurtured her true self.
The performances are August 6th through the 11th at The Glimmerglass Festival at 7300 State Highway 80 in Cooperstown, N.Y. Tickets and more information can be found online.
