“Shattered Crystals: A Talk by Holocaust Survivor Eve Kugler”
Pittsfield— Berkshire Community College (BCC) and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at BCC will present “Shattered Crystals: A Talk by Holocaust Survivor Eve Kugler” via Zoom on Wednesday, October 19 at 12:30 p.m. The free talk is open to all; registration is required. To register and receive a Zoom link, visit www.berkshireolli.org/event-4977519.
91 years of age, Eve Kugler is one of the few still living who witnessed first-hand the atrocities of the 1930s and 40s. In this talk, she will recall the terror, desperation, determination and series of tales of survival — including her father’s daring escape from a concentration camp — that eventually allowed her family to reunite in America in 1946. Eve worked as a journalist in the United States until she moved to London in 1990. She created and edits the publication Shattered Crystals, which contains testimonies of child survivors who attended her high school and is used by educators in the United States and Great Britain. Her book by the same name details her family’s Holocaust history.

Exploring Black Roots Music with Jake Blount
Great Barrington— The W. E. B. Du Bois Center for Freedom and Democracy and Dewey Hall are pleased to present Exploring Black Roots Music with Jake Blount on October 20 at 7 p.m. at Dewey Memorial Hall in Sheffield. The concert is a benefit for the Du Bois Freedom Center, an African American cultural heritage center being developed at the former Clinton A. M. E. Zion Church in Great Barrington. Doors for the concert will open at 6:30pm. There is a suggested donation of $25 at the door (more if you can, less if you can’t). Refreshments will be available. Dewey Memorial Hall is wheelchair accessible.
An acclaimed musician and scholar of traditional Black folk music, Blount speaks ardently about the African roots of the banjo and the subtle, yet profound ways African Americans have shaped and defined the amorphous categories of roots music and Americana. Blount’s new album is titled The New Faith. The album tells an Afrofuturist story set in a future world devastated by climate change. Conceived, written and recorded during the darkest months of Covid lockdown and just after the unrest that followed the murder of George Floyd, The New Faith invokes age-old spirituals, familiar in their content but extraordinary in their presentation.
