Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum presents ‘Votes for Women: How Tea Sparked a Suffrage Revolution,’ an exhibit centered around an early 20th century ‘Votes for Women’ tea set
Adams— From June 20th through October 31st, Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum presents “Votes for Women: How Tea Sparked a Suffrage Revolution,” an exhibit centered around an early 20th century “Votes for Women” tea set, donated by Ventfort Hall Gilded Age Mansions & Museum.
The tea set was commissioned by Alva Belmont, made in Portugal, and used as both a practical and decorative tool for the 1909 Suffrage Rally and 1914 Conference of Great Women (hosted by Alva herself) at Marble House and her Chinese teahouse in Newport, Rhode Island. The exhibit seeks to merge Alva’s story as an elite woman who dedicated her social power and fortune to the suffrage cause through tea and conversation. “Using floor-to-ceiling banners to transform our special exhibit room, guests will be able to walk into an interpretation of Alva Belmont’s tea house complete with one of the proverbs she hung on the walls which reads “A woman of strong character is said to be a hero among women,” said museum director James Capuzzi.
In the style of Alva Belmont’s Conference of Great Women and in connection with the exhibit, the museum is holding monthly Afternoon Teas featuring women poets, artists, and writers from Berkshire County and greater New England.
