Race Brook Lodge presents Arone Dyer
Sheffield— On Saturday, August 3rd from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Race Brook Lodge presents Arone Dyer.
Arone Dyer does a lot of things that don’t fit in tidy boxes — above all she is a celebrated experimentalist of the highest order, producing sound as a vocalist, musician, and composer.
She is a founding member of the uncategorical duo Buke and Gase whose album “Riposte” was included in NPR Music’s “20 Favorite Albums of 2010” and whose live performances, such as the Tiny Desk Concert have been widely praised. Arone is also the engine behind the hyper-pop duo Mistresses and the producer of roving, ever-evolving, non-static Dronechoir.
This performance is a paired-down recontemplation of the classical-tinged music from her most recent solo album, “arone x s t a r g a z e” with multi-instrumentalist Matthew Schrieber (Hinterlands.) Opening for Arone will be Liam Singer, a multi-instrumentalist who’s body of work reflects a lifetime of musical obsessions ranging from minimalism and chance composition to 80’s pop and confessional songwriting.
The performance is on Saturday, August 3rd from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Barnspace at Race Brook Lodge at 864 South Undermountain Road in Sheffield. The doors open at 7 p.m. Tickets and more information can be found online.

Ancram Center for the Arts presents Martha Redbone and Aaron Whitby
Ancram, N.Y.— On Sunday, August 4th at 4 p.m., Ancram Center for the Arts presents Afro-Indigenous singer-songwriter Martha Redbone and her collaborator and husband Aaron Whitby for a work-in-progress performance of “Conversations.”
This new piece was developed from intimate conversation with Native American elders and family members who have been in Redbone’s life for decades. As part of Ancram Center’s Summer Play Lab program, Redbone and Whitby are turning these conversations into songs, stories, and dramatic vignettes in a cross-cultural art form that they hope will speak to audiences in a new way.
“Often we don’t get to hear the viewpoints of elders, and their role in the world we live in today,” said Redbone. “The piece we’re developing will be based on stories about their lives and personal experiences. They have given me the honor and permission to turn their stories into songs.”

Redbone is celebrated for roots music that combines the folk and mountain blues sounds of her Appalachian childhood and the electric grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. She inherited her powerful gospel-singing father’s voice and the resilient spirit of her mother’s Native American heritage.
The performance is on Sunday, August 4th at 4 p.m. at the Ancram Center for the Arts at 1330 County Route 7 in Ancram, N.Y. Tickets and more information can be found online.

Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum presents a poetry reading and afternoon tea
Adams— On Sunday, August 4th at 3 p.m., the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum hosts poets Nancy Manning and Karen Ciosek for a poetry reading and afternoon tea service complete with sandwiches and cakes.
Did you know that women’s suffrage started with a tea party? On July 9, 1848, Jane Hunt invited Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Mary Ann McClintock, and Mary Wright to her house for tea. During their conversation, they struck upon an idea: a convention for women’s rights. Just ten days later, they held the Seneca Falls Convention, drafting an organizing document, the Declaration of Sentiments. Susan B. Anthony was not at the Seneca Falls Convention but met Elizabeth Cady Stanton later through a mutual friend, Amelia Bloomer. Susan and Elizabeth’s friendship, immortalized in their plaster cast handshake currently on display in the museum, was the lifeline of the early women’s suffrage movement.

The event is on Sunday, August 4th at 3 p.m. at the Susan B. Anthony Birthplace Museum at 67 East Road in Adams. More information can be found online.
