Great Barrington — Berkshire Playwrights Lab (BPL) will present the first offering in its 2016 Staged Reading Series, “Jennifer’s Birth” by award-winning playwright Rich Orloff, at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, July 13, at 7:30 p.m.

“Jennifer’s Birth” tells the story a 57-year-old woman who goes back to the time of her birth and witnesses events that shake up her views about her parents and about herself. NRBQ to perform at Club Helsinki Hudson

Hudson, N.Y. – Club Helsinki Hudson will present idiosyncratic rock band NRBQ on Wednesday, July 13, at 8 p.m. For half a century, NRBQ has been blazing a unique trail in rock ‘n’ roll. Still led by founder, pianist, and songwriter Terry Adams, the group continues to play its signature blend of early rock ‘n’ roll with touches of pop, jazz, funk, blues, and experimental music.

The original New Rhythm and Blues Quartet was born in Louisville, Ky., in the second half of the 1960s, when Terry Adams and Steve Ferguson (guitar) came together in the Adams family home. The band signed to Columbia Records and recorded two albums. By 1972, the line-up consisted of Adams, Al Anderson (guitar), Joey Spampinato (bass), Tom Ardolino (drums), and the Whole Wheat Horns – Donn Adams on trombone and Keith Spring on saxophone – and remained intact for two decades, releasing albums, touring incessantly, and building a devoted following along the way. The band spent most of the rest of the 20th century playing 200+ shows a year in the U.S. and Europe and releasing albums. NRBQ has been, since its origins close to 50 years ago, about the band and the audience going on a ride together without a musical map. Still touring with the Whole Wheat Horns, an important element of NRBQ’s sound, the band still performs with no set list: Adams calls the songs as he feels them and the live show goes where it goes.
