Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca present Antigona at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center

Great Barrington — Soledad Barrio and Noche Flamenca, whose vitality, energy and passion have won accolades around the world, are pleased to return to the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center with Antigona, their visually arresting adaptation of Sophocles’s Antigone. The dance drama merges live music, theatrical spectacle, and dance to create a production that propels the classic Greek play to new heights. In the production, Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca bring the inherent theatricality of Flamenco to bear on this classical tragedy – reigniting the theatrical potential of the Greek chorus as the lyrical and rhythmic heart of the drama.

Noche Flamenca was founded in 1993 by artistic director Martin Santangelo and his Bessie award-winning wife, Soledad Barrio, and is recognized today as one of the world’s leading flamenco touring companies. Noche has been hailed for its authentic performances of one of the world’s most complex and mysterious art forms.

Performances of Antigona will take place July 1–5. The running time is approximately 90 minutes with no intermission. Tickets, which are $25–$50 ($10 students under 18), are available through the Berkshire Edge calendaronline at the Mahaiwe, or by calling the box office at (413) 528-0100.

Shakespeare & Company presents Henry V

Lenox — Epic in scope, Henry V joins the repertory at Shakespeare & Company with a fast-paced and incisive production directed by Jenna Ware.  At once a paean to patriotism and a treatise on the absurdity of war, this riveting tale is filled with some of Shakespeare’s most quoted and rousing text. Henry V features Ryan Winkles in the title role and runs in the Elayne P. Bernstein Theatre through August 23.

Written in 1598, Henry V is rare among Shakespeare’s works as it contains explicit references to true events in England’s history. Following the death of his father, Prince Hal takes on the crown, rallies his exhausted troops and sets forth to repair his post-civil war nation. Full of intrigue, politics, and victory, Henry V deals with the preparation, process and consequences of war, specifically when war goes exceedingly well.

Tickets for Henry V are available through the Berkshire Edge calendar,  online at Shakespeare & Company, or by calling Shakespeare & Company at (413) 637-3353.
