TurnPark Art Space presents James Holl’s ‘From Energy, Matter Emerges,’ the final exhibition of its 2024 season
West Stockbridge— From September 14th to October 31st, TurnPark Art Space presents James Holl’s “From Energy, Matter Emerges,” the final exhibition of its 2024 season. The exhibit also features “Electron Neutrino,” an outdoor sculpture by Holl.
“From Energy, Matter Emerges” comprises select works of large-scale oil on panel paintings from Holl’s “Particle Point Collisions” series. “Particle Point Collisions” explores the notion that all of nature, at its fundamental core, is dots (squares) and lines, points of energy imagined in time resulting from the collision of quantum particles shot at each other at the speed of light “The Particle Point paintings express this energy through color that vibrates in the eye, as does music to the ear,” explains Holl. “Color is a means essential to express energy and the music of one’s soul.”
Holl’s outdoor sculpture, “Electron Neutrino,” also furthers the idea that all natural phenomena emerge at a very small scale. This threshold, called a Planck length, cannot be seen at scale, but can be measured and imagined. “When we think of the scale of things,” suggests Holl, “we generally measure what is large or small in comparison to human scale, the size of ourselves. If we regard the 2.3358-meter height and width of the Electron Neutrino sculpture seen through the gallery window, not to human scale but to the scale of the Planck length, we may consider it to be the largest sculpture ever made by humankind.”
Holl’s artwork has been widely exhibited and collected, and he is a recipient of numerous grants, awards, and commissions. He holds a BA from the University of Washington, an MFA from Columbia University, and a Certificate in Computer Animation and Visual Effects from New York University. He is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Marymount Manhattan College in New York City, where he directed the Graphic Design and Illustration and Animation Concentrations.
Holl’s book “The Landscape Painter 1972–2023” will be published this year by Edizioni Grifo of Lucca, Italy. A full-color, 300-page catalogue of his prolific career, “The Landscape Painter” tells the story of Holl’s personal and public encounters, theoretical confrontations, and reconciliations with the evolving culture of art from the 1970s to the present through Holl’s paintings, sculptures, and essays. A separate event for the book release will be held at TurnPark Art Space on October 19th.
The exhibit runs from September 14th to October 31st TurnPark Art Space at 2 Moscow Road in West Stockbridge. There is an opening reception on Saturday, September 14th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.More information can be found online.
