Mad Rose Gallery presents ‘Hudson Valley Abstractions,’ paintings and ceramics by Ginny Howsam-Friedman, Basia Goldsmith, and Josh Nathanson

Millerton, N.Y.— Beginning on Friday, August 30th, Mad Rose Gallery presents ‘Hudson Valley Abstractions,’ paintings and ceramics by Ginny Howsam-Friedman, Basia Goldsmith, and Josh Nathanson.

Painter Ginny Howsam-Friedman derives her paintings and drawings from the natural environment. She searches for underlying geometry and order amid nature’s chaos. Her work translates surface and subterranean geography to canvas and paper. The combination of macrocosm and microcosm realities cast the familiar in a new perspective.

Basia Goldsmith’s paintings reflect her deep personal connection with the Hudson River. From her apartment window on Riverside Drive, she captures the essence of color, line, and shapes, always conscious of the contrast between city and nature. Inspired by the American Abstract Expressionists, Ms. Goldsmith’s paintings depict the city and natures metamorphosis towards abstraction.

Josh Nathanson is a ceramicist who incorporates his obsession with texture into his creations. He produces one-of-a-kind tactile, functional pieces with an emphasis on the evidence of human touch and an embrace of imperfect organic rawness. “Clay is the perfect medium to replicate the inverse impression of every plant, fabric or surface.”

The show is on view beginning Friday, August 30th at Mad Rose Gallery at 5916 North Elm Avenue in Millerton, N.Y. There is an opening reception on Saturday, August 31st at 3 p.m. More information can be found online.

Guild of Berkshire Artists presents ‘Head Space, Earth Space,’ a new exhibit featuring the work of Celia Kahn and Christian Dewailly at Art on Main Gallery

West Stockbridge— From August 29th through September 8th, Guild of Berkshire Artists presents ‘Head Space, Earth Space,’ a new exhibit featuring the work of Celia Kahn and Christian Dewailly at Art on Main Gallery.

Celia Kahn and Christian Dewailly come together in an exhibit that is sure to give you a new perspective on the terms, head space and earth space. With mediums such as collage, ink, paper, paint and glue, both artists present their inner expression and exploration of the natural world as it appears to them.

Celia Kahn said, “For me the medium of collage brings together disparate images to form a new reality based on color, shape, texture and whatever is happening inside my mind and the outside world. Torn paper, ink, paint and glue become something unique and whole. This collection uses space as a way to explore the natural world and the illusions that appear within.”

Painting quickly became a great passion, and, with dedication and the help of very patient teachers I was able to progress rapidly. Art became a way to express my inner view of our wonderful world.”

Shakespeare & Company presents world premiere of Awni Abdi-Bahri’s ‘Three Tall Persian Women’

Lenox— From August 30th through October 13th, Shakespeare & Company presents the world premiere of Awni Abdi-Bahri’s “Three Tall Persian Women.”

This comedic play is about generational differences, grief, control, and learning to let go; but more than anything, it’s a love story to immigrant mothers. Golnar, a punkish Iranian-American millennial, returns home to her mother Nasrin for the anniversary of her father’s passing and walks into hoards of family memorabilia that her grandmother Mamani has moved in with her.

The cast of Three Tall Persian Women includes the playwright, Awni Abdi-Bahri; award-winning Iranian performer and writer Lanna Joffrey; performer and two-time Tony Award®-nominated producer Afsheen Misaghi, and Niousha Noor, who can be seen currently in the film “The Persian Version,” available on Netflix.

Originally staged at Shakespeare & Company in 2023 as a reading in the Plays in Process series, Ashurina said that the play explores how and why societies police women’s bodily autonomy. “We see how the women in this play are restrained by societal expectations, even in the safety of their own home,” she said, “and how being honest instead of staying ‘peaceful’ can help each generation learn valuable lessons from one another.”

The play runs from August 30th through October 13th at Shakespeare & Company at 70 Kemble Street in Lenox. Tickets and more information can be found online.
