Author recounts father’s Holocaust story

Annette Libeskind Berkovits
Annette Libeskind Berkovits

Pittsfield – On Monday, July 13, at 10:45 a.m., the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires will present Annette Libeskind Berkovits who will recount her father’s remarkable life story. Three years after her father’s death, Berkovits found a box of audio tapes on which her father narrated the story of his life, which became the basis of her book In the Unlikeliest of Places: How Nachman Libeskind Survived the Nazis, Gulags, and Soviet Communism.

Nachman Libeskind’s story is an odyssey through crucial events of the 20th century. He survived a pre-war Polish prison, witnessed the 1939 Nazi invasion of Lodz, and was imprisoned in a Soviet gulag. Upon regaining his freedom, he trekked to the Himalayas where he found and nearly lost the love of his life. The Communist regime and lingering postwar anti-Semitism in Poland later drove Nachman and his young family to Israel, and he finally settled into a new life in New York City with success as a modernist painter.

The talk will take place at Congregation Knesset Israel. For more information, please call the Jewish Federation of the Berkshires at (413) 442-4360, ext. 10
