Learn Mohican medicine for the winter months

Monterey— The first lecture of the Bidwell House Museum’s Winter Zoom Lecture Series is on January 18 at 7 p.m. online over Zoom.

Stockbridge-Munsee Band of the Mohicans Tribal member Misty Cook will talk about Mohican Medicine for the Winter Months. In this talk she will will discuss the history of Medicines throughout the Tribe and will focus on #6 Wild Bergamot, Mullein, and Sumac. She will also talk about gathering, drying and preserving herbs and will discuss the usage of herbs through stories of the Tribe.

The next lecture will be on February 15. Dennis Picard will discuss the Ice Harvesting industry in New England in the early 19th century which eventually employed tens of thousands of workers in New England alone and produced hundreds of thousands of tons of block ice annually.

All lectures will be held on Zoom and begin at 7 p.m. and they will not be recorded. Pre-registration is required and Zoom links will be sent out 1-2 days in advance to all attendees.

Examine organic vegetable farming at Berkshire Botanical Garden

Stockbridge— Berkshire Botanical Garden is hosting a three-session organic vegetable farming workshop beginning on Wednesday, January 18 at 5 p.m.

Led by Bridgette Stone, this class is designed for those starting or maintaining a vegetable garden. This online course will include discussion of seed selection, seeding schedules, bed preparation, and successful planting practice. During the first two sessions, students will learn about these practices, as well as what different vegetable families require to be successful. For the third class, students will demonstrate their learning by completing a vegetable garden design to be implemented at their own homes.

Bridgette Stone is the director of education at Berkshire Botanical Garden, a graduate of BBG’s Horticulture Certificate Program and a teacher.

“Uncovering the 19th Century Indigenous History” with Heather Bruegl

Hudson, N.Y. — Olana State Historic Site will host an in-person lecture on Uncovering the 19th Century Indigenous History on Wednesday, January 18 at 5 p.m.

Attend this in-person lecture with Heather Bruegl to learn more about the history of the Indigenous population during the time of Olana’s creation, a 19th century story you don’t always hear about. Gain a deeper understanding of what Indigenous nations experienced during a time of large scale colonization in American history.

Heather Bruegl is a citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and first-line descendent Stockbridge Munsee. She is a graduate of Madonna University in Michigan and holds a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in U.S. History. Heather consults for a variety of museums and universities and is a frequent lecturer at conferences on topics ranging from intergenerational racism and trauma to the fight for clean water in the Native community. Heather is a public historian, activist, and independent consultant who works with institutions and organizations for Indigenous sovereignty and collective liberation.

“The Proposal” screening in honor of Betty White’s birthday

Norfolk, Conn. — The Norfolk Library is hosting a film screening of “The Proposal” in honor of Betty White’s birthday on Thursday, January 19 at 7 p.m.

If you missed seeing The Proposal in 2009, now is your chance to watch the legendary actress and comedian Betty White on our big screen in the Great Hall. White won five Primetime Emmys and received the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award in 2009. Betty White died on December 31, 2021, at the age of 99.

In The Proposal, starring Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock, she played the vivacious Grandma Annie. The romantic comedy is about a no-nonsense publishing house editor (Bullock) who forces her younger assistant, Andrew (Reynolds), to marry her to keep her visa status and remain in the United States, avoiding deportation to Canada.  The faux couple fly home to Alaska for Grandma Annie’s birthday party.

Free introduction to mindfulness talk at Lee Library

Lee— Join Dr. Edwin Ozawa as he gives an informal introduction to mindfulness at the Lee Library on Wednesday, January 18 at 6 p.m.

To live life means experiencing stress, dissatisfaction, and pain. Practicing Mindfulness and meditation can help free us from suffering from life’s problems.

Most people have heard of Mindfulness and have some basic understanding of the term. Phrases like “living in the moment,” “in the zone,” and “present in the here and now” are commonly used.

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention right here, right now.

This event is free and no registration is required.
