Berkshire Bach Society presents Henry Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’ led by James Bagwell
Great Barrington— On Saturday, April 5th at 4 p.m., Berkshire Bach Society presents Henry Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas,” led by James Bagwell, in concert with professional soloists, chorus, and orchestra.

“Henry Purcell wrote Dido and Aeneas in the mid-1680’s at the apex of the English Baroque,” said Terrill McDade, Executive Director of the Berkshire Bach Society. “He based it on Book IV of Virgil’s Aeneid that recounts the classic story of love and abandonment of Dido, Queen of Carthage, by Aeneas, Hero of Troy, as he pursues his destiny. The piece includes Dido’s famous lament ‘When I am laid in Earth’ that has been used to express grief and loss for over 300 years in public commemorations, dramatic works, and film. It is astonishing to realize Purcell wrote the work about the time Handel and Bach were born, though in a very different musical tradition, reminding us of the extraordinary quality, variety, and sophistication of music created in Europe between 1600 and 1750.”
The concert is on Saturday, April 5th at 4 p.m. at The First Congregational Church, located at 251 Main Street in Great Barrington. Children and students with valid ID are admitted free. Tickets and more information can be found online.
