Bard College at Simon’s Rock to lay off 116 employees

According to the college's Director of Finance and Administration Philip Morrison, the college will start closing its campus on June 30 and will complete its shutdown by December 31.

Great Barrington — In the process of closing its campus in Great Barrington, Bard College at Simon’s Rock will lay off 116 employees.

In late November, the college announced that it would shut down its Great Barrington campus after the spring semester. The college will be relocating its campus to Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., starting in fall 2025.

According to the college’s Director of Finance and Administration Philip Morrison, who wrote about the college’s plans to the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, the college will start closing its campus on June 30 and will complete its shutdown by December 31.

“All positions and jobs at the facility will be eliminated during this same period, and approximately 116 employees will be affected, although one or more employees may remain employed for a limited time, no more than 60 days after the facility is closed to assist with administrative tasks related to the closing of the facility,” Morrison writes. “Employees are not represented by a union and there are no bumping rights. Each of these team members impacted will receive a written 60-day notice of position elimination.”

According to Morrison, the following staff members will be laid off on June 30:

  • 28 instructional staff members;
  • Six administrative staff members;
  • Seven academic-support staff members; and
  • Ten student-support staff members.

After the first round of layoffs, five student-support staff members are scheduled to be let go on July 31, followed by 52 student-support staff members on August 31.

The final two rounds of layoffs will take place on September 30, with three members of the college’s administrative staff scheduled to be laid off, and on December 31, with five members of the college’s student-support staff scheduled to be laid off.
