She graduated from Gowanda High School in 1943. She then went on to study aviation at Stephens College in Colombia, Missouri, where she learned to repair and pilot airplanes.

Louise Bergan, 78, of Lenox

She worked as an administrative assistant for the United Nations until her retirement in 1996. During her 30 years with the UN, she took advantage of the travel and assignments abroad offered by her position.

Robert Guidi, 95, of Lee

Bob was appointed by the Governor to work on land acquisitions including ones for construction of the Massachusetts Turnpike. He applied his expertise as a member of the team to build Monument Mountain Regional High School.

Merritt Rowley, 99, of Lee, formerly of Housatonic

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in August 1942, served as a military policeman in Italy, and was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal.

Elected to the Great Barrington Library Trustees in 1960, she served for 24 years, the last three as chairman.

John James Toffey IV, 85, of Canaan, Conn., writer, teacher and coach at Kent School, Simon’s Rock , and Berkshire School

John loved language, music, and tradition. He kept up his teaching to the very end, offering literature classes on Shakespeare, the Civil War and -- most recently – “Moby Dick.”

Matilda S. Mann, 87, of Great Barrington, former owner of Camp Half Moon

Mrs. Mann retired in 1988 from Sheffield Center School where she had worked as a teacher for many years.

Mary Harrison, 79, of Stockbridge, leader of many organizations

Mary served on many boards and was a member of many organizations in her lifetime including the Berkshire Botanical Garden, Old Curtisville, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Berkshire County Christian School, Hope Church, Berkshire Center for Families and Children, Chesterwood, Lenox Garden Club and others.
