In the past five years, the film industry has weathered pandemic shutdowns, dual actor and writer strikes, devastating wildfires, growing federal pressure, and shifting audience expectations about what is worth seeing in a theater versus what can wait for streaming. It is enough to make you ask: Why do people still want to make movies?

That question is at the heart of the Triplex International Youth Film Festival, playing Friday through Sunday. We have curated a collection of short films from young filmmakers around the globe—works that span meditative dramas, chilling thrillers, inventive animation, stirring documentaries, and boundary-pushing experiments. Together, they announce loud and clear that there is a new generation of filmmakers who wholeheartedly believe in the power of cinematic storytelling.

The festival also features conversations with industry leaders and filmmakers including Criterion’s Peter Becker; DreamWorks Animation’s Margie Cohn; actor Hamish Linklater (“Nickel Boys,” “The Big Short”); Berkshire Film and Media Collaborative’s Diane Pearlman; and directors Zia Anger (“My First Film”), Haley Elizabeth Anderson (“Tendaberry”), Tony Gerber (“War Game”), Adam Zax (“Hello, Bookstore”), and Carson Lund (“Eephus”). It is a mix of seasoned veterans and rising voices, all with insights into what it takes to make movies today.
TRIFEST is about embracing what we love about cinema and celebrating those bold enough to create it. It is a weekend to come together, look toward the future (uncertain as it may be), and get excited for what is next.
