Arthur Melvin Korte passed away Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2018, at his daughter’s home in South Annville, Pennsylvania.
Arthur was born Dec. 30, 1929, in West Stockbridge, the son of John and Marjorie (Rushbrook) Korte. Arthur served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953. He trained in Alabama before being stationed in France. After his time in the army, he owned a gas station and then worked for Marchetto Trucking, followed by J.H. Maxymillian in Lanesborough from which he retired. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and the Red Sox. He was famous for his pies that he would make on a weekly basis.
Arthur’s wife, Christine, who he married May 19, 1951, predeceased him May 4, 2009. Arthur is survived by his two daughters: Lisa (Louis) Caputzal of South Annville, Pennsylvania, and Andrea (Bill Hoag) of Hillsdale, New York; a son: James (Rose Seward) of Ashley Falls; three grandchildren: Carrie (James) Gilles, Caitlin and Kimberly Caputzal; one great-grandson: Trevor Gilles; two brothers: John Jr. and Robert; two sisters: Catherine Kilmer and Mary Kinman; and many nieces and nephews. Arthur was predeceased by his brother William and sisters Marjorie, Sarah, and Gladys, who passed in infancy.
The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 17, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. The service will start at 10:30 a.m. with Rev. Belle Fox-Martin officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the American Cancer Society, James A. Modolo Post #8183, or Masonic Village Hospice in care of the funeral home.
