Anthony “Tony” Gabriel, 93, a longtime resident of Housatonic, died Friday evening, June 30, 2023.
Born in Pittsfield on August 24, 1929, he was the son of Louis Gabriel and Carmela Sciola Gabriel. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Pittsfield.

A proud member of the U.S. Army, Tony enlisted on July 20, 1951 and was honorably discharged on June 19, 1953. He also worked for Prudential Financial and Insurance company for over 30 years.
Tony was a member of the local VFW, the ITAM lodge in Pittsfield, and Berkshire South in Great Barrington. He enjoyed reading, traveling, and exercising, but his favorite times were spent with his family.
He is survived by his eight children: Steve Gabriel and his wife, Randee (West Palm Beach, Fla.); Anne Fogarty and her husband, Matt (Sheffield); Louis Gabriel and his wife, Anna (Housatonic) Thomas Gabriel and his wife, Tori (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.); Anthony Gabriel (Housatonic); John Gabriel and his wife, Tish (Wichita, Kan.); Julie Gabriel Sharpe and her husband, Shea (Denver, Colo.); and Eric Gabriel (Housatonic, MA). He also leaves 22 grandchildren, Anthony L. Gabriel, Kelsey Gabriel, Melissa Fogarty, Kyle Fogarty, Douglas Brown, Patrick Brown, Kristen Gasperini, Karla Gabriel, John L. Gabriel, Damien Gabriel, Leah Gabriel, Anthony J. “AJ” Gabriel, Dominic Gabriel, Erin Gabriel, Paige Gabriel, Roman Kane, Tyleigha Carpenter, Ziggy Gabriel, Taurlach Gabriel, Tiziana Kane, Lily Sharpe, and Conor Sharpe; as well as seven great-grandchildren, Alexis “Lexie” Gabriel, Bella Ramos, Sophia Ramos, Emma Gasperini, Ember Kane, Leona Carpenter, and Luna Carpenter.
Tony was predeceased by his wife, Rosemary Doherty Gabriel, on December 13, 1995. The couple was married on October 9, 1954 at St. Mary’s Church in Pittsfield.
Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, July 8 at 10 a.m. at Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Parish in Housatonic, conducted by Rev. William P. Murphy, pastor. Burial will follow at St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Housatonic. The family will receive friends on Friday, July 7 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home in Great Barrington.
