Ann Marie Waldman, 92, of Great Barrington, died on Sunday, December 4, 2022 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Ann was born in New York City on April 17, 1930 to Irish immigrants, and joined the Higgins family as a preschooler; daughter to Steven and Marie (VanWicklen) Higgins. She was a graduate of James Madison High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., in the class of 1948.
Ann worked for Trans World Airlines in reservations and ticket sales on Wall Street and Grand Central Station in New York City. She married Fred Waldman on September 25, 1954 in New York City and moved to Great Barrington in 1956. She was an active leader of the Girl Scouts in both New York, and Great Barrington. Ann was a charter member of the James A. Modolo VFW post 8348. She was also district president of the disabled American Veterans Council 9. She was a charter member of southern Berkshire volunteer ambulance squad since 1968, and remained an honorary member until her death. She started working at the Great Barrington post office as a rural carrier in 1973, retiring after 20 years of service and remaining a member of NARFE (National Association of Retired Federal Employees).
Ann was pre-deceased by her husband, Fred, on December 11, 1995, and a daughter, Louisa, May Waldman, in 1956. She is survived by four children: Noel Critchley (Donald) of Torrington, Conn.; Mary Waldman-Seay (Jeff) of Deltaville, Va.; Emily Wagner of Great Barrington; and Charles Waldman(Martha) of Houston, Texas.
Funeral services for Ann M. Waldman will be held on Saturday, December 10 at 10 a.m. with a liturgy of Christian Burial at St. Peter’s Church in Great Barrington, con-celebrated by Reverend William P Murphy, Pastor and Ann’s grandson, Fr. Josh, Critchley, OFM. Family will receive friends on Friday, December 9 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Birches-Roy Funeral Home, 33 South St., Great Barrington. Burial will be at a later date at the Long Island National Cemetery in Farmington, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Ann’s memory may be made to either Saint Peter’s restoration fund, Hospice Care in the Berkshires, or Red Raiders Special Olympics in care of the funeral home.
