Andrew Russell Humes, 66, of Georgetown, Ky., formerly of Great Barrington, passed away on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at the UK Hospital in Lexington, Ky., surrounded by his three children. Son of the late former Ambassador John Portner Humes Sr. and surgeon Jean Schmidlapp Humes, Andrew was born November 29, 1957, at New York Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan.

Andrew spent his early years growing up on his family estate in Mill Neck, N.Y., until the age of 11 when his family moved to the United States Embassy in Vienna, Austria for his father’s work. At age 17, Andrew became a student of Bard College at Simon’s Rock and fell in love with the Berkshires. After finishing his time there, Andrew purchased his home on Long Pond Road in Great Barrington, where he lived and raised a family for 37 years. In 2020, he relocated to the beautiful horse country of central Kentucky, which he loved dearly.
Andrew is survived by his three children, Aurelie Coenen of Lenox, Marie Humes of Sheffield, and John Portner Humes III of Egremont; his two granddaughters, Ruby and Margot Coenen; and his ex-wife Elisabeth Humes, with whom he shared a lasting friendship.
A lifelong musician, traveler, and lover of animals, Andrew was known to make friends wherever he went and will be missed by many.
A memorial will be held on Saturday, September 7, at the John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden and the Tavern House at the Humes Preserve headquarters in Mill Neck, N.Y., his childhood home.
