An historic beauty with many possibilities

Sandy Sorel of RE/MAX Compass offers an historic beauty in the heart of North Adams with lots of possibilities and ready for its next chapter.

A Historic Beauty with so many possibilities. The former home of Charles and Effie Cutting, it holds charm, warmth and history. If you are fond of beautiful woodwork, built-ins, Butlers Pantries, Dado, crown moldings, beautiful windows, a true cook’s kitchen with a Viking stove, and a gracious lifestyle, you must come take a look. Presently it is a second home and an income-producing short-term rental. There are four fireplaces. Each has its own unique design. This property is next to the public library and has a view of Main Street. Imagine watching the Christmas Tree lighting from your front porch or enjoying evening cocktails on the side porch (needing some TLC at this time). There is outside space and a genuine antique clothesline. The attic holds beautiful built-ins and plenty of room to use as you wish. New HW heater, New Washer/Dryer/Refrigerator/DW. Some furniture may be included. Master Deed upon request

What is the most compelling thing about this property?

This historic beauty is situated in the heart of North Adams. It boasts breathtaking views of church steeples and the surrounding mountains. You also have a bird’s eye view of the Main Street, and you can hear the nearby church bells play. Built in 1881, the cherished home of Charles and Effie Cutting, this property showcases timeless architectural elegance. Step inside to find exquisite original features including pocket doors, intricate crown moldings, leaded glass windows, and finely crafted woodwork. There are four very different fireplaces. The chef’s kitchen is complete with high end appliances, including a Viking stove and two ovens.

For whom is this house perfect?

This house is perfect for the family who is looking for space, cultural opportunities and a walkable neighborhood. You are only a stroll away from shops, the public library, restaurants schools, MASS MoCA and MCLA. A short drive will take you to Mount Greylock, The Ashuwillticook Rail Trail, Windsor Lake, Williams College, Clarksburg State Forest, Natural Bridge, The Cascades, The Mohawk Trail and Vermont.

Presently it is a successful short-term rental and second home. Its location lends itself to easy access to all the Berkshires has to offer. Due to its location and layout, a professional office is a good possibility.

Of course, you can still use it as a short-term rental and/or second home. We have many short-term traveling medical personnel in the area who would love its accessibility and inhouse laundry.

What is the most fun thing to do within five miles of this property?

You can sit on your side porch and enjoy a morning coffee or share cocktails with your friends in the evening, all while watching whatever goings on are happening downstreet. You would have the perfect view for the Christmas Tree lighting, walk to the Farmers Market, celebrate fall at the Annual Fall Foliage Parade and join in the Halloween festivities. There is access in the attic to a small balcony that offers even a grander view.

There are so many ways to enjoy the area: skiing at Berkshire East, Bosquet, Jiminy Peak or Mount Snow; swimming, white water rafting, skating at the local rinks, hiking and biking on nearby trails. Tanglewood and the South County cultural amenities are only a short ride away.

If this house could talk, what secrets would it tell you about its history?

An ad for the Cutting & Co. store.

If this house could talk it might tell you that it was built in 1881 by Charles and Effie Cutting. Mr. Cutting at age 20 co-founded the retail store C.H. Cutting & Co. (1870), which survived many floods, two wars and the Depression and stayed in business for 89 years until 1959. The store was the agency for the Boy Scouts of America uniforms and accessories. It also carried high-end menswear and children’s clothing. In the off-season, clothes and accessories were carried up Main Street and then stored in the amazingly beautiful attic that you will find here in this house. The attic has drawers and closets and many hooks to tell the tale. It could easily be opened up to be an artist’s loft, a writer’s retreat area, more bedrooms or whatever you care to imagine.

Many families have lived here over the years. Many have reached out to tell stories or to ask questions. The Carriage house to the rear of the property was sold off and now it is designated as Condo #2 with its own street address and occupied by Optimum Healing,LLC. (The main house is designated as Condo #1. There are NO condo fees. There is a Master Deed. Each building has its own parking spaces.
