Alma Allen, 97, of Lee, Massachusetts

An active member of her community, Alma was a former president of the East Lee Civic Association, officer of the Senior Citizens Club, chairperson on the Council on Aging

Mrs. Alma Allen, 97, of Water Street in Lee passed away on Tuesday, November 24, 2015.

Born March 14, 1918 in Richmond, Mass., she was the daughter of Lazzaro and Rosa Gondelli Bona. She attended schools in West Stockbridge and later went to the Banford Academy, a hairdressing school in New York City. Mrs. Allen worked for several years as a hairdresser.

She married her husband, the late George E. Allen, Sr. on October 10, 1940 in West Stockbridge. He predeceased her on February 19, 2000.

An active member of her community, Alma was a former president of the East Lee Civic Association, officer of the Senior Citizens Club, chairperson on the Council on Aging and a volunteer at the Lee Senior Center. Alma was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Lee.

She enjoyed working with her hands, sewing, knitting, tatting and gardening. She also enjoyed square-dancing with her husband.

Alma is survived by her five children, Barbara Dunn (Robert Dunn) of Saco, Maine, George Allen, Jr. (Mary Brazeau) of West Stockbridge, Paul Allen (Annette Canale) of North Adams, Mass., Beverly Allen of Lee, and Stephen Allen (Ruth Stewart) of Wallingford, Conn.; her sister Betty Naventi of West Stockbridge, her grandchildren Jennifer Curtiss, Aimee Casey, Danielle Kinne, George “Ged” Allen, Jeffrey Dunn, Samantha Bernier and Carrie Allen. She also leaves her great grandchildren, Jacob and Matthew Farnham, Rily Michaud, Ryan Casey, Logan Allen, Landon Allen and Alex Bernier.

Along with her husband George, she was predeceased by her sisters Mary Dunne, Edna Waddell and Ida Bona and brothers, Lawrence, Thomas, Ferdinando and Arthur Bona.

Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 1st at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church in Lee, by Rev. Jack Sheaffer, pastor. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

The family will receive friends on Monday, November 30th from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington.
