After over 113 years, Gorham & Norton in Great Barrington closing down

The package store opened in 1911 and has been family-owned since 1922.

Great Barrington — On Friday, Nov. 1, Gorham & Norton’s owners announced on its Facebook page that the store will close on December 31.

The package store, located on 278 Main Street, was founded in 1911 by E.R. Humphrey.

It was taken over in 1922 by Charles Norton and William Gorham, who established Gorham & Norton.

The store was eventually taken over by Norton’s son Murray.

In 2004 Murray’s son John Tracy, along with his wife Diane, became the proprietors of the store.

The Tracy family put the business up for sale over a year ago.

“Diane and I want to thank our past and present customers for your patronage over the years,” John and Diane Tracy wrote in a message in the store’s window. “It is now time for our next chapter.”
