A dedication to Smitty Pignatelli: 22 years of leadership and advocacy

Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Lenox Library Association, a cause that reflects Smitty’s commitment to libraries and community service.

Lenox — The community is invited to celebrate the distinguished career and contributions of State Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli (D – 3rd Berkshire District) at a special event on October 9, 2024, to start promptly at 5 p.m., at the Linde Center Center for Music and Learning at Tanglewood. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Lenox Library Association, a cause that reflects Smitty’s commitment to libraries and community service.

A legacy of leadership and advocacy

For over 22 years, Smitty Pignatelli has been a steadfast advocate for the people of the 3rd Berkshire District. Known for his commitment to nonprofits, including the Lenox Library Association, and other nonprofit organizations such as Community Access to the Arts (CATA), Greenagers, and the Railroad Street Youth Project, Smitty empowered these and many more organizations to flourish under his distinctive leadership. His work to improve the quality of life in the Berkshires through advocacy for libraries, the arts, and community services has made a lasting impact.

An evening of tributes and performances

This evening will feature tributes from an array of community leaders, musicians, and artists, celebrating Smitty’s 22 years of service. Notable speakers and performers include:

  • Scott Pignatelli, sharing reflections on family and public service;
  • Gene Dellea, offering tributes on Smitty’s impact as a friend and on the community;
  • Wanda Houston, prominent American singer and actress;
  • Deborah Grausman, acclaimed singer and local artist;
  • Matt Tannenbaum, dedicating a special reading;
  • CATA, presenting a special dance performance in Smitty’s honor;
  • Performance by the Berkshire Children’s Chorus;
  • A commemorative video created by a Lenox Memorial High School art student;
  • Musical tributes from the Lenox High School Band; and
  • State Representative Smitty Pignatelli, providing closing remarks.

A fall-themed reception

As part of the celebration, attendees will enjoy a vibrant Fall themed reception featuring curated food-pairing stations, offering a delightful selection of dishes perfectly complemented by Sam Adams beer. Live jazz music will set the tone for a festive evening, accompanied by refreshments and a variety of seasonal treats. This reception will provide a warm and engaging atmosphere for all, fostering connections and conversations in honor of the event’s significance.

A champion for libraries

A true champion for libraries, Smitty provided unapparelled advocacy to ensure that these essential community hubs continue to thrive. Proceeds from this event will support the Lenox Library Association’s mission to provide vital resources and programming for the community.

About Smitty Pignatelli

A lifelong resident of Lenox, Smitty Pignatelli has served the people of Berkshire County with dedication and passion for over 22 years. His legacy includes decades of work in public service and nonprofit advocacy. As a champion for libraries, nonprofits, and community initiatives, Smitty has left a lasting impact on the Berkshires, inspiring future generations to continue his work of compassion and community building.

Smitty was first elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 2002 and serves the 3rd Berkshire District—the largest legislative district in the House. Born and raised in Lenox, he is the dean of the Western Mass delegation with an honorary doctorate from MCLA and a financial degree from Babson College.

An entrepreneur, Smitty ran his own electrical business and worked in banking all while serving others. He has dedicated over 40 years to public service and was first elected to the Lenox Planning Board in 1987. In 1992, he was elected to the Board of Selectmen and was elected chairman on four different occasions, serving until May 2003. Smitty also served as a Berkshire County commissioner from 1995 to 1999, including two years as chairman of the board.

In 2017, Smitty was appointed to serve as House chairman for the Joint Committee on the Environment, Natural Resources, and Agriculture. He currently serves as vice chairman of the House Rules Committee, and as a member of the Joint Committee on Financial Services; the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development; and the Joint Committee on Education. He has served on the House Committee on Ways and Means; Joint Committee on Higher Education; and the was the vice chairman of the Joint Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Cultural Development. Smitty is also the former House chair of the Cultural Caucus.
