Great Barrington and Lenox — It was a day of pride and the celebration of accomplishments as Monument Mountain Regional High School held its 56th commencement at Tanglewood on Sunday, June 4. One hundred and thirteen students graduated at the ceremony, which was held outdoors at Tanglewood’s Tanglewood Serge Koussevitzky Music Shed during an unseasonably cold spring day.
Despite the cold weather, the spirits of the attendees at the event were warm with happiness for the graduating class. “In addition to your many accomplishments, I appreciate your voices, your commitment to supporting each other, your decency, and your heart,” Superintendent of Schools Peter Dillon said at the beginning of the ceremony. “You’ve come together as a class and you’ve made remarkable decisions about what’s next and took the time to find the right matches, including great colleges, technical programs, work, and gap years. I would like to share a quote from Taylor Swift that recommends ‘No matter what happens in life, be good to people. Being good to people is a wonderful legacy to leave behind.’ Try hard to do wonderful things, make mistakes and try again.”
In his speech, Salutatorian Tyler Sprague said that he learned many life lessons during his time at the school. “[My time at Monument] has taught me the difference between taking my work seriously, and taking myself seriously,” Sprague said. “I’m truly grateful for these lessons. I hope we all continue to reflect on the lessons that we learned.”
The ceremony continued on with a speech by Valedictorian Aria Grossman. “Today, I will be discussing a topic that I think would resonate with a lot of kids: mindless internet scrolling,” Grossman said. “One day, I was on YouTube, I found a lot of different categories, including Taylor Swift videos, videos of cats, and I continued to go on, I found a video of someone drawing a photorealistic glass of water. As the video progressed, I watched as lines turned into shapes and textures, and pencil marks transformed into showers and reflections. Each stroke increased my awareness of everything that goes into a glass of water. In the process, I gained a deeper appreciation for the depth and complexity of visual experience. High school, in many ways, has been like a sort of deconstruction. We’ve delved into the chemical and biological composition of our universe. We’ve learned about the phonetic and grammatical structures that make up languages. We’ve investigated the ideas and events that have shaped our history and got us to where we are now. We see what elements go into a car, a computer program, or piece of news. In the process, you’ve gained a greater sense of wonder and gratitude in the world in which we live.”
