Helen E. Johnston of Sheffield died Monday, Nov. 13, at the McCarthy Care Center in Sandwich. She was born Sept. 18, 1939, in Sheffield, the daughter of Russell and Helen Woodbeck. She was a 1957 graduate of Sheffield High School. After marrying in 1960, she worked at the Canaan Savings Bank and later served as the office manager at Custom Extrusion Inc. in Sheffield for over a decade. She also served as the town clerk in Sheffield from 2000 through 2003. Upon retirement she served as a private health aide for seniors and was a member of the Sheffield Council on Aging as well as an active volunteer at the senior center. She was an active and engaged parishioner at Our Lady of the Valley Church.
For those who knew her, Helen wasn’t afraid to share her perspective and she personified goodness, common sense and human decency, and had a wonderful sense of humor to top it off. She loved her grandchildren dearly and welcomed every opportunity to watch them at their various activities and sporting events.
She was predeceased by her husband of over 51 years, Richard P. Johnston; and her sisters Barbara and Sara. She will be greatly missed by her son Steven and fiancée Karen and adored grandchildren, Gavin, Natalie, Quinn, Lila and Grayson of Sandwich; sisters Nancy Smith and Carolyn Wilkinson of Sheffield; and many nieces and nephews. Per Helen’s request, there will be no services and burial will be private.
